Beauty Recipes

Grab a cup of tea and come on a  journey with Karonv

The reasons we should start creating our own cosmetics are many maybe too many to even list.  But I’ll give you my reasons and maybe they will inspire you to adopt some of these very easy recipes into your daily routines.

Caring for your skin Naturally  is also about knowing that any natural product you can make is going to be far superior than any mass-produced chemical-filled jar of marketing exaggeration.  A good example is companies boasting that a product has lycopene in it, isn’t that the same lycopene found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon, guava, rosehips, papaya?

Recipe .1 start your day off by boosting your metabolism and helping your body to cleanse it’s self naturally.  One cup of distilled hot water 1/2 of a fresh squeezed lemon, 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar.

Especially good for very oily skin.

Rose Water & Glycerin Astringent: 1/2 pint olive oil, ounce rose-water, few drops of glycerin, ounce vodka combine all ingredients. I wanted to post this information for anyone wanting to create lotions creams for extended shelf life.  Thank to Green Aromatherapy for this information.

Some information from Green Aromatherapy about preservitives.

Vitamin E and Rosemary Oleorsesin Extract  are both antioxidants.  Antioxidants prevent oils from going rancid as quickly as they normally would if left out under normal conditions. So, this makes them good additions to recipes that have oil in them to increase the recipe’s shelf life.  Usage – Vitamin E, 1 % of total formula weight.

Phenonip and Germaben II, and Germall Plus are actual preservatives. They inhibit the growth of microorganisms, yeast and fungus in lotions, creams, etc. If one is making products for resale, the FDA requires that you put a preservative in any cosmetic that is not a soap. If you are simply making products for your personal use, you do not have to include preservative. However, if you choose not to preserve your lotion or cream (or other formula) then you must treat the finished product as a perishable food item. Either use it up quickly or store in the refrigerator and use within two weeks.

Germaben II and Germall Plus are water soluble. This means that they will only work if water is the major ingredient in your recipe. These products do not withstand high temperatures well, so they must be added when your recipe is finished and cooled to 100 degrees F or below.

Phenonip is oil soluble, and so is better for products where oils comprise the majority of ingredients in your formula. Phenonip can also withstand much higher temperatures, allowing more flexibility regarding what stage you add the preservative to your recipe.

Recommended usage rates are meant as guidelines only.

All new formulations should be challenge tested to ensure proper preservation.

Lotions and Creams must be protected against Bacterial, Microbial and Fungal attack and also from rancidity. Good hygiene and usage of safe Preservatives and Antioxidants protects you and your customers from potential injury. Preservatives protect against microorganisms, yeasts and fungus while Antioxidants guard against rancidity. The use of both a preservative and a antioxidant while lengthen the shelf life of your lotions and creams.

Have you ever dreamed of making your own hair-quenching concoction? You have more reasons today then ever to start making different choices in your hair care. Did you know that shampoo’s very well might be the culprit of many a balding women and men… we are applying more toxins willingly to our skin then ever before.  Be sure to check the labels even the (all natural) labels you will be shocked. I knew toxins where there but I didn’t realize to what degree.

Try one of the recipes below, depending on needs of your hair I think you’ll find a recipe here to satisfy both needs and likes!

You will find natural treatments and remedies for hair loss, growth, conditioners, shampoo’s, hot oil treatments in this section I will be updating this week (more to come)  I almost always use Essential Organic Oils in all of beauty supplies but if price is an issue EO’s are great also but I would not suggest scented, perfumed oils you will not achieve the same results that you will with EO’s.

Aromatherapy can really work!  There was even a Scottish study that took 86 people with alopecia and divided them into two groups. Each was given a formula of essential oils to massage into their scalp daily. One group had essential oils of rosemary, thyme, lavender, and cedarwood in a base of jojoba and grapeseed oils. The others used the unscented carrier oils alone with no essential oils added. At the end of seven months, the study showed that 44% of people who used the essential oils had improvement in their alopecia. Pretty amazing considering most products on the market for hair loss are toxic bad for the environment. Try some these don’t get discouraged give yourself a few months to see true results, your hairs condition didn’t happen over night and it wont be corrected but you will see some amazing results right away.

Quick homemade Shampoo:  1/2 cup distilled/spring water,  1/2 cup castile soap, 1/2teaspoon Jojoba oil add essential oils of your choice.. Rosemary is great for restoring hair! mix ingredients keep in an old shampoo bottle for further use.

Quick Essential Oil Treatment for Hair Loss:  1tsp carrier oil and a few drops of rosemary essential oil. The choice or carrier oil is up to you but may I suggest Jojoba is amazing for hair if this isnt available Olive oil… and so on. If you have the time make an infused herbal oil using Basil,Bay, Arnica, Sage sage can have a darkening affect so caution here. Add Essential Oils to your herbal infused hair treatment. I will be adding a lot more on this topic soon.

Natural Hair Shampoo:  1 Tbsp baking soda and 1 cup of warm water. Stir until mixture is  clear.  It’s really that simple and it works great plus will balance your scalps PH.

Hair Loss Mask:  Cinnamon, Honey, Olive oil  Those suffering from hair loss or baldness, may apply a paste of  hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder before a bath and keep it for approximately 15 minutes, and then wash the hair.  Now this mask will also lighten our hair with beautiful golden high lights, note this before using that this mask will lighten hair the color of your hair and how often you use the mask depends on how much lighter it will become.

Rose Mary Herbal Hair Treatment: Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Oil: 1tsp rosemary EO, 1/2 cup dried chamomile flowers  1/2 cup dried rosemary leaves 1 cup jojoba oil (or oil of choice)  Stimulates blood flow and circulation, relieves discomfort, provides tonic and  astringent qualities.

Hot Oil Hair Growth Treatment:  1tbs jojoba oil,  4tsp grape seed oil, 3 drops rosemary oil,  3 drops cedar-wood oil,  3 drops lavender,  2 drops thyme oil,  Mix ingredients, heat on low just warm slightly apply to hair and scalp with massage leave on for at least an hour or wrap in towel over night will give you added benefit.

Essential Oil Blend Stimulates Circulation:  2 oz almond oil, 2oz jojoba oil, 6 drops rosemary EO, 6 drops lavender EO, 6 drops cedar wood EO,  6 drops thyme EO, Massage into scalp, don’t forget the ends of the hair as well. Leave in for 1/2 an hour, wash and condition.

Hair Product/Build up Remover: 1/4 cup vinegar, 1 cup water after conditioning the hair use this as a final rinse. Leaves your hair soft and shiny while removing build up. You can also just rinse with vinegar the smell will dissipate after a while leaving you with soft silky  build up free hair.

Nourishing Hair Mask: 1/2 a banana, 1/4 avocado, 1/4 cantaloupe, 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil, 1 tablespoon yogurt.  For extra conditioning, squeeze in the contents of a vitamin E capsule. Leave in hair for 15 minutes.

Egg & Olive Oil Hair Mask:  1 egg, 2 tbsp olive oil blend well then add with massage to hair covering scalp and ends for 15 minute minimum rinse with cool water wash and condition as normal.

Natural Dandruff Shampoo:   Make a shampoo by mixing 100g each of amla (Indian goose berry), reetha, and shikakai, and boil in two liter of water until the liquid reduces to half. Use this shampoo for one month. Dandruff will vanish and your hair will become thick and silky.

Ayurvedic Cures for Hair

Add 6-8 drops of lemon juice to an egg. Beat well and apply on your hair followed by washing with an herbal shampoo.

Use a very mild shampoo and condition your hair at least twice a week. Make sure to rinse out the conditioner thoroughly.

Amla, shikaki powder mixed with curd is a good conditioner and should be made use of.

Massaging with aroma oils once a week reduces hair fall and makes them soft and silky. Rosemary oil and titri oil can also be used.

Mix curd, lemon and mustard oil, apply gently on hair and wash your head after about half an hour.

Add few leaves Hibiscus (China rose) to a glass of water. Heat it. The juice of a lime should be squeezed in the sieved mixture and it should be applied to the hair before shampooing.

Take amla (100gm), shikaki (100gm), brahmi booti (10gm), shilajit (1/2 gm), anaarchhilka (20gm), bhringraj (10 gm). Soak them overnight in an iron utensil. Blend and make a paste. Apply well into the scalp. Keep it for 1-2 hours and wash it off with warm water.

The oil from the amla, prepared by boiling dry pieces of amla in coconut oil, is a hair tonic for enriching hair growth and prevent hair loss.

Use lavender or lemon shampoo if your hair are oily and if dry, use titri oil or rosemary shampoo too.

Rinse hair with lemon juice or vinegar

Soak a towel in hot water and squeeze lightly. Cover your hair with this for 10 minutes and do try this for almost a week.

Squeezed lemons can be soaked overnight and the water can then be used to clean the hair.

Dry peels of lemon and oranges should be used. This will maintain soft and silky hair and also removes dandruff from the scalp.

Drink 10-12 glasses of water daily and have a high protein diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

Two tablespoons of fenugreek (methi) seeds soaked overnight in water. The softened seeds should be grounded into a fine paste in the morning and applied over the scalp & left for half an hour and then washed thoroughly. This is highly affective to remove dandruff.

Mustard oil:boiled with henna (mehndi) leaves is useful for the healthy growth of hair.

I’m going to include a few link just to keep this short.
The FDA does require that you provide proof that each batch you ship for sale is adequately preserved. This means you have to do microbial challenge testing and demonstrate that your product is not “…contaminated with microorganisms which may be pathogenic, and the density of non-pathogenic microorganisms is low.”
If you’re going to use an alternative preservative, you must prove that it works!
      http://chemistscorner.com/alternative-cosmetic
I’m not sure if its a 100% reguired or if its just testing to ensure its adequately preserved. I tried calling the FDA cosmetics line to get some clarity on this subject/closed providing the number for anyone who would like to call. 1-888-723-3366 FDA cosmetics line.

All your recipes are awesome and highly beneficial! to the skin.
I have a question though about the Aspirin mask – since Aspirin is a synthetic composition (medicinal salicylic acid) and in the long run it has be proven to be toxic to the liver when taken internally, is it safe to use on the skin?
    Thanks!
